FORMER DB Cargo shunter No. 08888 became the newest loco on the Kent & East Sussex Railway when it arrived at the line’s Wittersham Road yard on December 15.
It has been privately purchased by father and son members Mark and Chris Stuchbury, and will be used for shunting duties plus hauling the heavier engineering works trains.
The loco began life as No. D4118 in February 1962, and in the intervening years has seen use at locations around the country from Bristol to Mossend and Gateshead to Hoo Junction.

It was moved into the carriage and wagon shed at Tenterden in early January to have its vacuum brake equipment installed, thereby reinstating its original dual air and vacuum braking capability.
The former remote control equipment is also being removed, and the loco should be ready for use by early March. A repaint should follow at the end of the summer, when it will lose its EWS maroon and yellow colours for an as yet undisclosed livery.
