TRANSPORT for London has issued a notice to tender with the Official Journal of the European Union to ‘sensitively restore and develop’ South Kensington station and surrounding buildings. The real estate company Savills is working with TfL to identify a shortlist of qualifying interested bidders.
Much of the station and surrounding buildings owned by TfL are Grade II listed and therefore need consent from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. If planning permission is obtained, TfL would aim to create step-free access to the sub-surface District and Circle Line platforms, with work starting in 2018 to finish by 2022.
Part of the work includes bringing a disused eastbound platform back into use.

TfL is seeking a partner for the project because it is facing a significant cut in funding. In 2012/13, the GLA Transport Grant to TfL was set at £2.829 billion, but this had fallen to £1.75bn in 2014/15, £1.42bn in 2016/17 and by 2020/21 is expected to fall to £1.01bn.
